World; N.C. Wyeth Map of Discovery - Eastern &
Western Hemispheres, 1928
Item #: BNT3295 Our price: $225.00 |
Charming and mystical these old prints show the adventures sought by Mariner's and gave to man a realization of the true magnitude of his world. One, the Western Hemisphere shows the copyright 1927 far lower right corner. The other is covered by the framing.
The maps were originally commissioned as part of a series of five murals for the Hubbard Memorial Hall (The National Geographic Society's first formal library) in Washington D. C. Designed to simulate the illuminated mariners' charts of the 16th century. The set was called The Romance of Discovery and the five murals were also published as frontispieces in the National Geographic Magazine in March, May, July, November and December 1928. The hemispherical maps were the fourth and fifth mural.
These where found in a ship captain's home, a woman, who was a vast collector and lived on the border of both Canada and the U.S. Both appear to have been pasted to the board. Minor soft scratches from storage. What I thought was soiling is identical to the few sets I've found out there that sold awhile ago. These appear to be very scarce. Frames measures approx. 17.5 inches tall by 19.5 inches wide.
