This is an original antique photo from an
estate purchase. This is a great piece of history for the
antique and vintage photograph collector or historian.
This photo depicts in so many ways the hardships in poverty
by dress and work that a large family of the mid-west would
face during the mid 19th century. One boy in the back row
with his hand on his sister's shoulder is missing a finger.
The youngest boy on the father's lap may be in fact ill or
deceased. This was a family estate purchase where the young
benefactors believed some of the boys were part of a
Minnesota enlistment. No way to prove this but they do look
of the era and all appear to be of the right age.
Only two daughters! A family of this size and only two.
Thirteen children and the 'poor' mother is holding her arm
and sitting in such a way that she may have had a stroke or
other ill. Families of this size were common back then,
many of the children would grow up working along side their
parents in farmsteads etc.
Wonderful old antique photo that measures approx. 8" by 6"
for the photo itself with a board of 8" by 10".
Please see photos and email with any questions prior to
purchase. Thanks for looking.
