WILLMAR -- On the afternoon of March 16, 1965, Paralyzing St. Patrick's Day blizzard!
Here are three photographs of the heavy snow that hit Willmar. A poster on a utility pole shows that the 'FENDERMEN CAR CLUB' for a Rod and Custom show. The Fendermen Car Club were active in the 1960s. This particular photo is slightly different from the others but all were together in the estate we purchased many years ago.
Some history below.
As Minnesota blizzards go, the St. Patrick’s Day storm of 1965 was memorable. Heavy snow, fierce winds and subzero temperatures brought the Upper Midwest to a standstill. Schools closed. Roads were blocked and travelers stranded.
By the time it ended, at least three people statewide had died. Many roads were so choked with snow that traffic was down to one lane. It took more than a week for some country roads to reopen. “Worst Blizzard in Years Paralyzes Willmar Area” read the West Central Daily Tribune’s front-page headline on March 17, 1965.
