Antique Cabinet Card Memorial Photograph; “Son” and
“Brother” Mourning Floral Tribute c.1890s
Item #: BNT3452 Our price: $68.00 |
Beautiful 9 × 7 inch cabinet card memorial photograph featuring an elaborate floral tribute arranged around a portrait of a young man. The ribbons read “Son” and “Brother,” marking this as a heartfelt family remembrance piece from the late‑Victorian era.
The young man’s portrait is a carefully cut and mounted photograph, a practice commonly used when families wished to create a special memorial but only had a small or informal original image available. The photographer would assemble the tribute, place the portrait within it, and then photograph the entire arrangement to produce a finished cabinet card. This handcrafted method adds to the individuality and sentiment of the piece, reflecting the family’s desire to honor their loved one with the materials they had.
Sepia‑toned image on original card stock with expected age toning and light edge wear. A touching and uncommon example of Victorian mourning photography, prized for its emotional resonance and the artistry of its constructed memorial display.
Ideal for collectors of antique photography, funeral and memorial ephemera, and 19th‑century mourning art.
