c. 1930s although someone's writing below the photo
states 1940's.
A real photo postcard of 1930s Yaquina Bay Bridge Newport
Oregon ~ O.C.H. 101 probably a photographers mark.
Work on the Yaquina Bay Bridge began in August 1934. Two
years later, on Labor Day, the bridge opened to traffic –
135 feet above sea level and at a cost of $1.3 million.
Spanning 3,260 feet, with two 350-foot steel arches and a
central 600-foot steel arch, the bridge was one of five
designed by Conde McCullough on the Oregon Coast.
The bridge uses Art Deco and Art Moderne design motifs as
well as forms borrowed from Gothic architecture. The
Gothic influence is seen in the balustrade, which features
small pointed arches, and in the arches of the side span
piers.
The ends of the bridge are augmented by pedestrian plazas
that afford a view of the bridge and provide access to the
parks at the landings by stairways. Pedestals were
provided for proposed sculptures of seals, but the statues
were never executed.
Un-used and in very good condition.
