More Information

Wonderful early Catholic depiction oil on canvas of a young priest being caught sneaking a smoke on a pipe.

An address on the back in pencil shows that this may be an early oil made with regards to the Catholic Diocese Of Peoria, Peoria, Illinois.
There is also the name Father Schutz on the back, which may show that it was painted with a past clergy in mind or given as a gift. A date show Jan, 8th, 1915.
The history of the Diocese and its establishment go back to 1875.

Beautiful painting with a little bit of humor and 'worry' for the fate of the young priest who wanted to try his hand at smoking.
The Cardinal or elder priest, wearing what looks to be a traditional biretta, is walking in with whip in hand while the younger scholar has his back turned.
A pot of smoldering tobacco and ash on the floor in a large basin, along with bottle tops and the artist signature.

Approx.size: 18.45 by 14.75 for the frame and 15.5 by 12" for visible painting

Signed Olive McCutcheon and dated. Hard to see date, but looks to say '16. Which goes along with the date on the back being a year earlier when the Cardinal may have been stationed.
Too hard to guess and again, date hard to read. Some history found below: (not sure if same Olive) -- Olive McCutcheon Childs; Born in 1893 and died in 1978 Hennepin, Illinois
